Well, it has to do with the fact that resources are fiinte. Sedentary life of early humans is not an accident, as it is often portrayed. Agriculture, war, male supremacy, statehood, food taboos, despotism, capitalism, the industrial bubble, etc. are all the result of population, production, and ecological conditions. As anthropologist Marvin Harris puts it, Thus reproductive pressures, intensification, and environmental depletion would appear to provide the key for understanding the evolution of much of human history (including today what you call poverty and human rights abuses). When population rises faster than production, people will be pushed into pauperization. (This is an explanation for the gruesome practice of female infanticide). There’s a pretty well known statement that people’s wants and needs are unlimited but resources are limited. That’s the idea of scarcity. So we’re undergoing intensification, which leads to declining efficiencies, which leads to lower standards of living. We’re seeing this already. What’s necessary then, under this scenario anyway, is continuous innovation in efficient labor-saving machines for production. Is technology winning at the present? I would argue no.Dr. Harris makes the point, the rise in living standards began only 150 years ago, while the race between rapid technological change and intensification has been going on for 500 years. Progress is not inevitable. Much of human history is marked by pauperization of the masses. For someone interested in human rights, this fact cannot be taken lightly. Increasing efficiencies do not necessarily increase standards of living or decrease population growth. So when we dismiss those assumptions, the issue at hand is overpopulation. The issue must be framed in this way. When we talk about the current increases in technological efficiencies and increasing living standards, we have to note that this is an anomaly in human history and cannot be expected to necessarily continue. Dr. Harris attributes it to revolutions in fuel, contraception, and jobs. As we’re already quickly realizing, especially with recent spikes in oil prices, things cannot necessarily continue as they are (i.e. through dependence on fossil fuels). Again, the pertinent issue at hand is overpopulation.
